Our rustic den is the original room of the house, built as a post-and-beam structure around 1780. We're told it was a trading post for folks passing through Goshen Pass on their way west, and the Alleghany room above it was probably a loft for the owners. The original fieldstone fireplace was uncovered during one of the renovations, and the wide, heart-pine floor (which has never been sanded) is also original to the 1780 structure. Rough-cut barn boards and old beams complete this cozy room, where guests enjoy a roaring fire on cold evenings, or relax in the shadowy coolness in the summertime. 

The den has a satellite TV, VCR, and DVD player for guest's use, as well as games and books. We have an extensive collection of books about the area, maps - including a wall-mounted relief map of the Shenandoah Valley - local menus, and brochures for local attractions. A portable phone is available for making calls. A small refrigerator is stocked with cold sodas (freshly-brewed iced tea is available in season) and there's always a plate of Dick's homemade brownies on the side table. Some of our guests spend much of their time here, sitting on the comfortable sofas or in the sunny windowseat.

During VA winters, or any other time of the year, the warm coziness of our den is a welcome retreat.
