From Rockbridge Discovery Magazine:
"Like so much of the region, the Hummingbird Inn is steeped in history. As a private residence, the old Victorian home hosted Eleanor Roosevelt in 1935 and has variously served as a hotel, a boarding house, a restaurant/inn, and - since 1991 - a bed and breakfast.
One room in the inn was built in 1780, though the main structure was completed in 1853 by William Teter, the inventor of the pull-down window shade. Today the inn and its acre of gardens is owned by Dick and Pam Matthews, who welcome visitors, both those who come to stay a night or two, or those who simply want to look around.
While the (five) guest rooms are sumptuously furnished with antiques, the chief emphasis at the inn, says Pam, is comfort. "We have one simple rule," she says, "and that is to make yourself at home." And that's easy to do at the Hummingbird, either on the wrap-around verandas, the glassed-in sun room, the comfortably furnished living room, the den with its stone fireplace, or the deck out by the old barn and the creek."
From America's Wonderful Little Hotels and Inns
by Sandra Soule (St. Martin's Press):"There's a lot to be said for staying at inns just a short ways off the beaten path -- quite often the prices are lower, the welcome warmer, and the atmosphere more relaxing. Such a place is the Hummingbird Inn, an easy drive from the Shenandoah's historic towns and major sights."
From Out Here Magazine:
By Donna Alvis-Banks:"George Washington never slept here, but Eleanor Roosevelt did. The first president could have slept at the Hummingbird Inn's original structure, a post-and-beam dwelling that probably served as a trading post for westward-bound travelers pausing at Virginia's Goshen Pass. It was built in 1780, the year Washington found himself in the midst of the American Revolution."
